Spring Deer Hunting Prep at Briarwood

The fall may seem far off, but the best hunts are already taking shape. The spring season marks the beginning of our most critical work – the behind-the-scenes effort that transforms our Ohio property into one of the best places to hunt whitetail deer in the Midwest. While you’re enjoying summer, we’re building the foundation for your trophy whitetail deer hunting experience this fall. Here’s what happens on our estate in the spring, and why it matters when you’re in the deer blind this season. In the spring, our crew is out spraying and clearing competition from our 80+ acres of food plot areas. We don’t just knock down weeds—we strategically eliminate anything that will compete with the crops we’ll plant later this summer. This isn’t random maintenance work. Every spray pattern and every cleared area is calculated to maximize what those plots will produce come fall. Next comes soil enrichment. We fertilize based on soil tests taken earlier this spring, ensuring our plots will have the nutrition they need to produce the kind of growth that holds mature bucks through the entire season. When you see deer pouring into our plots in October and November, this spring work is what made it possible. Strategic Habitat Management Our team also mows select areas to guide deer movement while leaving critical pockets of cover untouched. We don’t just cut grass—we engineer deer behavior. Every strip we mow and every thicket we leave alone creates natural funnels and secure corridors that work in your favor when you’re hunting. The goal? Reduce pressure while creating predictable movement patterns. By the time you arrive for your hunt, mature bucks will feel secure using the routes we’ve carefully designed for them. Building Our Intelligence While we don’t put cameras up in the spring (that comes later in summer), we walk the property, noting changes from last season, and planning camera locations for when the time is right. Every mature buck on our property has patterns, and we build the intel that will matter when you’re in your blind this fall. Our guides can position you where mature bucks feel secure because we’ve tracked their patterns season after season. Why Spring Work Creates Fall Success Here’s the thing about the best whitetail deer hunting—it doesn’t happen by accident. Most hunting properties are managed reactively. Food plots planted at the last minute. Stands hung in obvious spots. Deer patterns guessed at rather than understood. At Briarwood, we start in the spring because trophy whitetail deer hunting requires months of preparation, not weeks. By the time opening day arrives, our food plots have been established for months, our habitat management has guided natural deer movement, and our scouting has revealed where mature bucks feel secure. This early work is what gives you consistent opportunities at trophy bucks. When you book a hunt with us, you’re not just reserving a blind and a guide—you’re securing access to months of professional preparation. The Briarwood Difference This level of preparation is what defines a custom whitetail deer hunt at Briarwood. When you hunt with us, you’re experiencing the result of year-round management, not seasonal guesswork. We control every variable we can: pressure, genetics, habitat, and nutrition. Our breeding facility ensures superior genetics. Our habitat management creates predictable movement. Our guides can place you where mature bucks feel secure because we’ve watched them grow season after season. That’s how we ensure that when you’re ready to hunt your opportunity is genuine, not hoped for. This is what sets apart whitetail deer hunting at Briarwood—meticulous preparation, steady land stewardship, and a commitment to giving every hunter the best possible shot at a trophy buck. Your Deer Hunt Starts with Our Work Today By the time you arrive at Briarwood this fall, our food plots will be drawing mature deer, our habitat management will have guided their movement patterns, and our intelligence gathering will have revealed where the biggest bucks feel secure. That’s the difference between hunting and hoping. When you book with Briarwood, you’re hunting the result of year-round preparation, professional management, and a team that understands what it takes to consistently produce trophy whitetail deer hunting opportunities that become stories you can share for years to come. The best dates book early, and this spring preparation is exactly why. Ready to experience trophy hunting backed by months of professional preparation? The best dates go fast—book your hunt now.

Why Outdoor Corporate Retreats Build Better Business

In today’s fast-moving, deal-driven world, genuine connection is rare. But ask any seasoned business leader where the most meaningful relationships take shape, and odds are it’s not in a boardroom. It’s somewhere quieter that’s more open and genuine. Somewhere quiet like time spent in a deer stand, that opens the door to deeper conversations later, around the fire or over a meal, when the moment feels right. For leaders in construction, logistics, and the trades, cultivating loyalty and trust with employees, partners, clients and potential clients often takes more than a conference room. A corporate retreat or outing at Briarwood Sporting Club offers something no slideshow or one time wine and dine dinner ever could: uninterrupted time in the outdoors. This is where meaningful conversations unfold naturally and relationships are built to last. Too often, business outings feel like just another meeting with a nicer view. They’re in generic hotels with awkward small talk and follow-ups that never go anywhere. They’re forgettable and that’s a missed opportunity. At Briarwood, every detail is designed to create lasting impressions, not just temporary escapes. Connection That Outlasts the Contract There’s a reason more companies are moving beyond the typical golf-and-dinner routine. A guided whitetail deer hunt or fireside conversation over farm-to-table meals strips away titles and tight agendas. It puts people on even ground – boots in the mud, laughter in the lodge. And when that happens, walls come down and real conversation and business naturally follow. We’ve seen it firsthand: a sales leader trying to get time with a key decision-maker finally gets that chance, over bourbon, after a successful hunt. That’s not a perk. That’s a moment of trust and it often leads to the kind of follow-up that closes deals. We booked our fourth corporate trip to Briarwood. Here’s why we keep coming back. It’s rare to find a place where the people, the experience, and the results all align. The hunting is top-tier. The guides know their stuff. The bonds our group forms here last long after the hunt. And when we’re not in the blinds, we’re around the table—swapping stories, building relationships, and landing trout. That’s what makes it unforgettable. That’s why we return. — Mark G., Missouri Why Trade Leaders Are Choosing Outdoor Retreats That Reflect Their Values At Briarwood, we work with folks who know what it means to build something with their hands – and who can spot quality when they see it. Our corporate guests usually come from the trades because this experience speaks their language. Hard work. Precision. Results. Bringing a client or colleague to our central Ohio hunting preserve isn’t just about saying thank you. It’s about saying, “You matter to us and we don’t cut corners.” Our all-inclusive hunting packages make it simple. You show up—we’ve already scouted, stocked, and seasoned the experience. From premium lodging to world-class guides, everything’s handled. We go to great lengths to take care of you and your guests—because every detail, every conversation, and every moment reflects back on your business and your reputation. A Peek Into Private Whitetail Hunting Retreats Most groups arrive Sunday afternoon and settle into one of our private lakefront lodges, complete with stone fireplaces, outdoor firepits, and WiFi. That evening includes cocktails and dinner prepared by our in-house chef, followed by a range visit to sight in weapons. The hunt kicks off Monday morning. Each guest is paired with a dedicated guide and placed in a pre-scouted blind or stand overlooking high-traffic areas near food plots. Because Briarwood is a privately owned hunting preserve, we’re not bound by Ohio’s public hunting seasons or weapon restrictions. That means the method of take is entirely up to the hunter and gives your guests the flexibility to hunt their way, with confidence. Non-hunting guests are welcomed too, enjoying the same upscale amenities and full access to fishing, hiking, and relaxing on the estate. Afternoons are reserved for fishing, bird shooting, rounds of sporting clays, or simply unwinding. Evenings bring hearty meals, storytelling, and that special kind of connection that happens around a glowing fire. A Successful Corporate Retreat Starts Months Before You Arrive Long before the first guest steps onto the property, Briarwood is already preparing for their arrival. It starts with our planning process, which is designed to make hosting effortless and the experience unforgettable. From the moment you book your corporate retreat, we begin working directly with you or your administrative team to gather key details: dietary preferences, accessibility needs, and preferred beverages. Every guest touchpoint is thoughtfully prepared to make sure they feel valued—and you look like the hero. We also handle field dressing, caping, and transportation to local processors and taxidermists. Every detail before, during, and after the hunt is designed to reflect the quality of your brand and the relationships you’re investing in. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, our field team is in full swing. May and June are critical months for habitat work. While your team is wrapping up spring projects, ours is fine-tuning food plots, hanging stands, scouting patterns, and looking for movement. It’s year-round care that ensures your guests step into a high-success opportunity the moment they arrive. An Experience That Pays Dividends The most valuable takeaways from a Briarwood retreat aren’t the shoulder mounts or the bourbon by the fire. It’s the loyalty that comes from sharing something real. It’s a handshake that means more because of the story behind it. Whether you’re thanking key clients, creating space for new business partnerships to take root, rewarding leadership, or planning an offsite your crew actually looks forward to, a Briarwood retreat ensures your guests leave with stories to tell and a handshake that leads to the next deal. Let’s Plan Your Next Corporate Retreat Schedule a call with our team today so we can create a trip your clients and colleagues won’t forget—and one that strengthens their loyalty to your business.

How Trout See Color… Fly Fishing with Confidence!

Trout, those colorful and captivating creatures expertly darting through streams at Briarwood Sporting Club and through other Ohio waters, possess many adaptations that suit their aquatic life. Their vision plays a critical role, especially when it involves the perception of color – and that matters to all of us who are pursuing them on the fly! Let’s dive into how these fish experience the world visually and what research has to say on the matter. A primary focus of my Master’s research at The Ohio State University centered on fish vision which has continued to drive my interest nearly 40 years later.  How do trout perceive color? Bear with me as we dig into some science. Unlike humans, trout have vision tailored to their watery home, enabling them to detect a range of colors. This capability is crucial in the murky or clear waters they often inhabit. And we have those varying conditions at one of the midwest’s premiere fishing clubs, Briarwood, located in Bellfontaine, Ohio. The retina of a trout’s eye is rich in cones, the cells responsible for color vision in bright light. These cones contain pigments sensitive to different wavelengths of light, thereby allowing trout to perceive various colors across the spectrum, but primarily in the blue and green wavelengths. However, it’s important to note the differences in their environment. Underwater scenes have a distinct light quality, and colors can appear muted or quite different. Despite these variations, trout’s color vision helps them in distinguishing prey, navigating their habitat, and even recognizing other trout. Yes, some more science…but it is essential… Researchers have long been intrigued by the ability of trout to see colors. And if you want to hook some of these Ohio trout, you should care about this too.  Various studies conducted over the years have shed light on just how sophisticated trout color vision is. One such study in the Pacific Northwest explored how different species of trout respond to natural prey and colored flies under varying light conditions. The findings revealed that trout do have a preference for certain colors, which can change depending on the available light and water clarity. Also, electro-chemical tests on trout eyes have clearly indicated trout can see a wide range of colors. These studies reflect a complex system of color detection in trout, and how they react to various colors, proving trout can interpret colors. This is vital to us fly anglers.  Ah yes, let’s now focus on fly selection – what and when…  So as anglers, we now understand that the color vision of trout is in fact, important; it impacts the selection of flies. Seasoned anglers know that “matching the hatch”, or using flies that mimic the color and appearance of local prey, can significantly increase the chances of attracting trout. For example, at Briarwood we know that the trout will react to flies that have colors akin to crayfish, stoneflies, mayflies, chironomids, grubs and a host of terrestrials like grasshoppers, beetles, ants, or various worms that may fall in the water. Moreover, considering the light conditions and water clarity can guide the choice of lure color to ensure it stands out or appears natural to the trout, depending on the desired approach. Selecting the right colored fly is speaking the visual language of trout. Trout are most sensitive to blue and green light spectrums, with some species also quite sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light. When choosing flies, in addition to matching prey coloration, consider the following tips: The effectiveness of your colored fly also depends significantly on how and where you present it in the water. Consider these best practices: Anything else I should keep in mind? Ultimately, success in fishing is about understanding your target and its environment. Here are additional tips to consider: Conclusion In wrapping up, understanding trout’s ability to see color adds an invaluable layer to your fishing strategies. Fly fishing for trout in Ohio can be tough enough, but like with anything where there is an “us and them” component, know everything you can about your foe! It’s clear from decades of research and our own experiences, that trout do indeed perceive colors. This insight means that choosing flies isn’t just throwing out a line in hope. It’s a thoughtful decision. Happy fishing and tight lines my fishing friends!

But when Chris sent me trail camera photos of some giants, I knew I was in for an unforgettable experience. I was not disappointed. I got my monster buck walking through a picked corn field. And although he was the pinnacle of the trip, it wouldn’t have been the same without the Briarwood staff. They catered to my every need.
