The Top 10 Fish Species to Target in Ohio

Ohio Fish Species to Target This Spring and Summer

With spring finally here, everyone is itching to spend time on the water! Besides breathing in the fresh spring air and enjoying the milder temperatures, the spring also provides some of the best fishing opportunities of the year. There is no better place to do this than in the resource rich state of Ohio.  Home to numerous streams, lakes, and world class fisheries, it’s no wonder so many people travel to the state for their fishing expeditions.  However, what they don’t know is the incredible opportunities that lie not only on the state’s public water, but with-in the state’s private property. This includes world-class fishing clubs such as Briarwood Sporting Club.

With over 125 acres of pristine waters stocked with the countries best fishing opportunities, every angler’s target species can be found in one place.  There are fly casting only waters, family friendly areas, and a sustainable fish population to make every anglers dream a reality.

Below is a list of ten exciting and unique species to target this spring in the great state of Ohio.

Trout Opportunities

One of the most exciting and sought after fishing opportunities in the state of Ohio is the trout fishing.  Species selection is abundant, opportunities are rare, and the novelty of the catch is high! Many people don’t expect Ohio to be an incredible trout fishery, but between cold water streams and the gorgeous fishing clubs such as Briarwood, it’s no surprise that it attracts fishermen across the country.

1.Steelhead Trout

Steelhead migrate up the streams to spawn in the spring and return to their homes for the remainder of the year.  This allows for an exciting but limited opportunity for anglers to capitalize on their presence. Steelhead can get relatively large in size, with many fish surpassing that 30” mark.

These fish can be found primarily on Lake Erie and its tributaries.  Most setups include long rods with light line.  Tackle includes spoons, larger jigs with maggots, and spinners for spinning rods.  Fly fishermen can find success with nymphs and streamers.

2. Rainbow Trout

The gorgeous rainbow trout is one of the most popular fish to target across the country.  Unfortunately, rainbow trout are NOT native to Ohio and instead are stocked every spring and fall in select waters.  Since they can only survive in Ohio’s coldest and smallest streams, these fish generally do not live throughout the summer and provide a limited fishing period immediately upon stocking.  These trout tend to be 10 to 14 inches in length and are a popular target for fly fishing enthusiasts.

It’s recommended to use lightweight spin-casting gear or a four to six weight fly rod.  For tackle use small spinners, spoons, and jigs.

3. Brown Trout

Brown trout, similar to Rainbow trout, are not native to the state. They too are stalked yearly, and only in a very few select waters.  However, these fish are expected to grow for a few seasons rather than dying off during the summer months. They are another novelty trout that Ohio enthusiasts get the honor to catch.

Brown trout are also stocked monthly in Briarwood in both its fly and spin casting streams.

Just like with fishing rainbows, brown trout can be caught off lightweight gear.  Similar presentations such as streamers and woolly buggers work well too.

4. Brook Trout

Brook trout make the list because they are the only species of trout native to Ohio, and they are native in very limited numbers.  Because they need to spawn in very clear and cold water, they are exclusive to the state’s smallest, spring fed streams, very similar to the rainbows and brown trout.  These fish can also be caught on lightweight spinning or fly gear in a similar manner as the two species above.

5. Blue Trout

Due to their rarity, blue trout are one of the most highly sought after fish species in the country.  They are a rare version of the rainbow trout and unique only to select waters. This can be a catch of a lifetime for many trout enthusiasts.

Unique Trout Fishing Opportunities

Blue trout is a great example of the fishing opportunities that are unique to Ohio’s Briarwood sporting clubs.  However, all trout fishing opportunities improve significantly within Briarwood Sporting Club itself. Briarwood stocks their pristine streams monthly, assuring high quality, indefinite fishing opportunities for the trout fishing diehards.

Anglers that are interested in chasing these species should contact Briarwood Sporting Club regarding membership options and angling tactics.

For those who prefer to fish with a fly rod, a fly only zone exists on the eastern end of the property.  This assures fly fishermen the tranquility and opportunity that isn’t always presented to them when fishing high pressured, public waters.

Popular Game Fish

6. Walleye

The walleye is one of the most sought after fish species in Ohio.  From the famous Lake Erie to the small, freshwater streams located throughout the state, walleye opportunities in Ohio are endless.  They are not only a popular fish to pursue but a great one to eat as well.  Spring is a fantastic time to capitalize on their post spawning hunger so be sure to utilize that time to get out on the water.

Walleye fishing can mean a finesse bite. Therefore, jigs, minnow or twisty tails are great options when targeting the species. A medium action rod with fairly light line can help pick up a weak jig bite.

7. Perch

A cousin to the walleye, Perch area also abundant in Ohio waters. Lake Erie is one of the most popular perch destinations in the country. These fish are another favorite species of the residents, and can be found in numerous waters throughout the state of Ohio.

Perch will require a similar presentation as a walleye but with lighter spin-casting gear.  Anglers should use a light action rod with 6 to 8 pound test line.

8. Largemouth Bass

Bass is the most popular game fish in the world.  Located in waters from Canada to Mexico, it’s no surprise that it, too, plays a big presence in the state of Ohio as well. Largemouth opportunities are plentiful across the state, including in some of the state’s biggest bodies of water.  However, unlimited opportunities also reside in the sporting clubs themselves.

9. Bluegill

For angler’s looking for oversized pan fish, Ohio is a perfect option. The bluegill sunfish is abundant and can found up to twelve inches in length and two pounds in size (which is incredibly large for a sunfish).  They are frequent and fun fish to catch for children and families.

Bluegill can be caught on small presentations on ultra-lightweight rods with 4 to 8 pound test.

10. Muskellunge Muskie”

Muskie fishing popularity is growing nationwide.  From the elusive bite, to the incredible challenge they present when they are on the line, muskie fishing provides an adrenaline rush nearly all sportsmen can appreciate.

Spring is one of the best times to target these fish. The water temperatures are cold and the bite is strong after spawning.  Ohio is home to both pure bred and hybrid species, both of which can be caught on heavy duty fly casting gear and large bait.

The best part? All of these game fish can also be found in abundant numbers on pristine waters at Briarwood Sporting Club.

Every Fish in One Place

There is no need to travel hundreds of miles or multiple destinations to be able to catch numerous different fish. They can all be found in one place: Briarwood.  When looking for family friendly activities, fantastic accommodations, and a large variety of fish to make everyone in the group happy, it’s no doubt that Ohio’s best destination is Briarwood Sporting Club.

The waters are sustainable. They are stocked regularly, properly regulated, and not subject to the fishing pressure and practices of the public waters. That’s where sporting clubs such as Briarwood Sporting Club are the perfect all in one place for angling enthusiasts. Ohio is a fantastic destination for angling enthusiasts to visit all year around.  With the frequent stockings, pristine waters, and diverse fish species.  It’s obvious Ohio should be on every fisherman’s destination list.

What Does It Take To Produce Trophy Whitetails?

Trophy Ohio Whitetail Outfitters | A Look Inside Briarwood’s Estate

When it comes to producing trophy Ohio whitetails it’s oddly enough quite simple, involving only three factors: genetics, age, and nutrition. These three factors have been managed for intensively here at Briarwood Sporting Club. The right genetics, letting bucks advance into older age classes, and a healthy and productive habitat are all our top priority. When combined, high caliber deer, unmatched hunting, serene wilderness habitat, and stunning amenities produce a trophy Ohio whitetail outfitter experience that can’t be beat.
Briarwood Sporting Club is home to a trophy Ohio whitetail estate. Unique experiences coupled with the perfect natural habitat creates the ideal setting for the hunt. Several years have been invested compiling the industry’s best whitetail genetics to provide our clients with the largest whitetails in North America. On our guided whitetail deer hunts, one can expect to see several whitetails in excess of 200″ and have the opportunity to harvest the Buck of a Lifetime.” On the other hand, Briarwood also offers open range hunting with the same amenities and lodging offered. Simply put, Briarwood Sporting Club is the total package, it is a trophy Ohio whitetail outfitter with top-notch lodging, a hunting experience, and a setting that can’t be beat!

How We Produce Trophy Ohio Whitetails

What is important to understand about antlers is that they are considered secondary sexual characteristics. In other words, in order of importance in a buck’s life, annual antler growth doesn’t rank as the number one priority. Instead, survival and maintaining a healthy body does. Now within this relationship of the three, they are bound together, each requiring the benefits of the others. For instance, without the genetics for trophy antler production, the factors of age and nutrition provide little assistance in acquiring a level of exceptional antler growth. Thus when we have these three factors working together this creates the opportunity to produce the best antler growth possible. Now, of those three, let’s first look at how genetics influences the production of trophy whitetails.

Genetics

Undoubtedly what attracts hunters to whitetails is the sheer diversity in antler growth which is the result of antler genetics. We want to produce and hunt bucks that possess trophy antler characteristics. At times antler growth, especially trophy antler growth, appears to be a roll of the dice. But is it? When speaking of antler genetics, there are regions within all states where whitetails reside that hold pockets” some large, others smaller, of genetics that consistently produce good numbers of large antlered deer. And on the flip side, there are areas within those states that produce an abundance of average antlered deer that will at times find themselves with an outlier that exhibits exceptional antler growth.
In this case, it is a roll of the dice” that a trophy will be produced. Such is the fascinating world of genetics. But in those aforementioned trophy” areas, they simply have genetics shared by both the bucks and does that create the opportunity to consistently produce high numbers of trophy class bucks, year in, year out. Therefore within the populations that contain exceptional antler genetics they obviously have the best odds of producing trophy bucks in any given year. When it comes to trophy antler production, we have to pursue them where they exist. What does it take to produce trophy whitetails? The foundation begins with the right genetics but once again, without age and nutrition, even superior genetic qualities will not be fully expressed.
With understanding the important role of genetics in producing trophy antlers and why some areas produce more trophy deer annually than others, what can we do with the genetics we have in our given hunting locations to provide them with the best opportunity to fully express their potential? This is where age and nutrition come into the equation.

Age

Age plays a fairly large role in trophy whitetail production. It is known that allowing a white-tailed deer to mature gives them the greatest opportunity to maximize antler growth and body size. The question often asked is, why is this? Bucks are in the process of growing and developing their body structure, therefore calories are prioritized to those areas, not to antler growth. In addition, through these early years, young bucks will be “pushed out” or dispersed by their mother and thus moving quite frequently in an effort to establish a new home range. Considering these events of their early years, bucks face the daily stress of potential predation (internally and externally), perhaps less access to quality nutrition and frequent movement, all of which impact their physical well-being. As stated earlier, antlers are secondary sexual characteristics….they receive the “leftovers” of antler building materials from the body, once the body is taken care of.

This is why, as deer managers, we try to manage the age structure of the buck portion of our deer herd to ensure we have healthy numbers of mature deer. At maturity, bucks have an established home range – thus they have fewer factors working against them that would inhibit maximum antler growth. This is the time in a buck’s life that they can begin to efficiently maximize the quality and quantity of nutrition that is available to them and allocate more resources (calcium, protein, fats, etc.) to antler growth. What does it take to produce trophy whitetails? The foundation is the right genetics. From the right genetic foundation, the structure has the opportunity to achieve its genetic potential upon reaching maturity. The potential growth is now only limited by nutrition. In the case of Briarwood, having the perfect balance in herd dynamics coupled with a pristine habitat and access to quality food sources, deer are allowed to express their full genetic potential!

Nutrition

Nutrition plays a very important role in the production of trophy whitetails and that starts at conception and continues through development in the womb to maturity. It’s quite simple, there is a reason why your mom wanted you to eat your fruits and vegetables in addition to meat and a glass of milk…she knew the importance of proper nutrition in the development of your mind and body at an early age! Deer are no different.
Bucks can have the best genetics in the world in regards to trophy antler production, but if they do not have access to sufficient quality nutrition, preferably throughout life, they can struggle to ever fully express their genetic potential. As secondary sexual characteristics, antler growth can and will vary from year to year based on the quantity of quality nutrition that is available to a buck throughout the year.
What does it take to produce trophy whitetails? The foundation is the right genetics. From this foundation, the structure has the opportunity to achieve its genetic potential upon reaching maturity. The quantity of quality nutrition that is readily available will dictate the extent to which trophy antlers are developed. With a mix of habitat, mature timber, proper deer densities, the right genetics, and around 80 acres of highly nutritious deer plots we are able to produce world class whitetails.

Ohio is a fantastic destination for trout fishing enthusiasts.  It’s filled with beautiful scenery and incredible fishing opportunities.  However, gaining access to the states resources can be a challenge for its residents and non-residents alike. Public land access is limited and places that do allow fishing can be run down, polluted, and unmanaged. It can be a defeating issue for sportsmen who simply want to enjoy their outdoor passions and can’t (or want) to attain land of their own.  So what are the best opportunities for trout fishing in Ohio? Hunting for Trophy Ohio Whitetails

Ohio Whitetail Outfitter | Briarwood Sporting Trophy Whitetails

By: Kristy Daniels

Last October I spoke of this month and how much I love it.  Truth is….this is also the month I turn into a hunting widow.  When my husband, Chris Daniels, isn’t guiding or working at the club, he’s in the stand with our kiddos.  This is our “why and how” we landed in Central Ohio: Deer Hunting! It is what also lead us to now have one of the best Ohio whitetail outfitters in the state, a true trophy whitetail experience like no other!

Earlier this year, we decided to take the leap and lease ground around Logan County.  We now have the exclusive hunting rights on several large tracts of land.  What does that mean exactly?  Briarwood now offers free range hunts!  It’s an exciting move for us, and one that we’ve mulled over for quite some time.

Bottom line: Hunters stay at Briarwood.  Our guides take them to the free range property and stands.  Hunters have the opportunity to see/ harvest a mature Whitetail buck on carefully managed land!

We take care of everything.  Yes, everything.  You don’t have to plant food plots, check trail cameras, or worry about where to place your stand.  It’s all done.  Hunters show up ready to hit the woods….It’s really that simple!

Below are some photos of the deer we’ve been seeing on these properties….

Interested?  Want to see more photos?  Check out the scouting page on our website.

We guarantee a first class experience….all you have to do is pray to the deer gods that a nice 10 point will walk in front of you!

Happy October and good luck!

-Kristy

Ohio Fishing Club Opportunities

 By: Kristy Daniels

At least that’s what I think!  If you ask me WHY I think Briarwood Sporting Club is the best Ohio fishing club, I’d say it’s because we have the best members! When we purchased the club in 2008, we hadn’t the faintest clue about fishing clubs.  I grew up in Indiana, where we ate everything we caught (think Bluegills here), and my husband Chris grew up in Florida fishing the Gulf of Mexico (don’t think Bluegills….think Tarpon and Grouper).  Neither of us knew a thing about trout or fly fishing…..Or what we were getting ourselves into!

Fast forward 9 years and we have made some incredible improvements to the club, amazing friendships, and increased our ranks with some incredible fishing club members!  We love when they stop by the office to say hello, show us pictures of the fish they caught, or better yet when they introduce us to their kids and grandkids!

Just last week, a member stopped by the office to grab a cup of coffee.  We chit-chatted for a few, and then he proceeds to say “I sent this photo to my wife along with #BestBriarwoodDayEver!  I had a blast!”. Another gentleman who’s been a member 30+ years, taught his 5 boys how to fish here, and now brings his NUMEROUS grandchildren out twice a year, every year.  This family knows how to fish Briarwood like no other!  Here’s a cute photo of one of his grandsons with a trout he caught himself.

This feedback is exactly why we offer the experiences and opportunities we do at Briarwood. Unforgettable memories for outstanding outdoorsmen and women!

I could go on and on about our members (and I am sure I will in a future post), but to wrap this up…..Briarwood truly is a family and our members are what make it truly special.

Fish Species at Briarwood Sporting Club

Ohio Fishing Club | Fish Species at Briarwood Sporting Club

Fall is in full force here in Central Ohio, and I keep waiting for “peak” color.  I’m afraid I am not going to see what I’m hoping for.  Half the leaves are off, and the other half are some shade of yellow or still green for that matter!  Don’t know what happened with the foliage, but one thing is for sure…..the fish are active! I wanted to touch on what fish species we have at Briarwood Sporting club. One thing is for sure, we have a come a long way to become a topnotch Ohio fishing club! We now offer fishing for a variety of fish species.

Trout Species

Prior to us purchasing Briarwood, the trout were stocked a few times a year.  90% of the trout caught were 1-2 lb Rainbows.  Chris and I decided we wanted to make the fishing more exciting.  We now stock a variety of trout monthly: Rainbow, Brook, Brown, and Golden.  Today, for the first time, we stocked Blue trout.  These are a cool blue/ silver looking fish.  They were small (around 1 lb), but we are hoping to stock them next year when they are 2 lb+.  They’re a pretty fish and one I think the members will enjoy catching.

Other Fish Species at Briarwood

We have improved our lake fishing tremendously over the last 9 years.  We’ve added Perch, Smallmouth Bass, Catfish, Walleye, Hybrid Striped Bass, Black Crappie and Tiger Muskie.  In addition, we have stocked feeder fish including Shiners and Minnows.  It has been fun watching them grow.  We often have to make them catch and release for a period so they have time to mature.

Briarwood Lakes and Streams

Of course, all of these fish species have to go somewhere! Here is a quick summary of the fishing locations we offer at Briarwood.

Lakes

Experience “Mother Nature at her best” while taking in Briarwood’s spectacular wilderness lakes. Water among pastoral backdrops is the theme here, and with 125 acres of lakes, one will never thirst for splendor. Take up the rod and reel in some of Ohio’s deepest bodies of water and catch yourself a Small or Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Walleye, Perch, Catfish, Tiger Muskie or Stripers.

Streams

Briarwood offers some of the finest dry fly fishing in the country, as natural hatches of aquatic insects occur regularly. Our spring fed streams are regularly stocked with Brown, Brook, Golden, and Rainbow trout. Briarwood has a series of 4 different stream sets, providing plenty of space and diversity, and a special trout fishing area for families with children. Our family fishing areas provide adults an opportunity to introduce fishing to kids and allows them to use easier spin casting rods.

Lodging

The atmosphere here at Briarwood is very relaxed and casual. For your convenience, we have four rustic lodges, each located on its own private lake. Furnished with DirecTV satellite, modern kitchens, massive stone fireplaces, recreation equipment, and large wooden decks complete with outdoor grilling stations.
